Modular Audio Storage (RackIt by Per Madsen)

Per Madsen created a line of modular audio storage components in the 80s and 90s in San Francisco based around an Oak LP rack that could ship flat and be easily assembled.  Its popularity led him to create an array of complementary units to house other audio formats.  The system is modular, so the parts fit together and can be arranged and changed according to your growing needs.  After Per Madsen retired, Jef Fowler created TwoCanHiFi to try to continue this.  Because of the intricacy of the CD unit, Jef asked me to make the CD-180 for TwoCanHiFi.  In 2016, Jef asked me to begin selling direct to his customers.  I have since grown and am making other Per Madsen RackIt components.  Though Per Madsen decided his designs weren’t necessarily copyright-able, he enjoys that people continue to value his ideas.  I’ve grown to really respect his design and fabrication decisions as I uncover them when recreating his pieces.  Now, 2 per cent of my gross sales on Per Madsen designs I send to Per Madsen.

I now offer Per Madsen’s units in Walnut and Mahogany!

The CD-180 was one of the Per Madsen’s Compact Disc storage units.  It can also be configured for DVD/Blu-Ray.  I make two versions of the CD-180, the standard Birch front and the Oak front.  Both units have the same construction, a solid red oak frame with a birch plywood interior.  The difference is in the drawer fronts:  the oak have oak veneer.  The birch units are $309 plus shipping and the oak units are $349 plus shipping.  The shipping is $30-60 per unit depending on how far you are from Oregon.  The shipping is not cheap because they can’t be broken down and shipped flat like the LP rack;  we’re charged dimensional weight as if they weighed twice as much as they do.  The upside?  No assembly for you!  They are ready to be used as soon as you take them out of the box.

The dimensions of the CD-180 are:  18″ wide x 15″ tall; depth of case is 13 3/4″, depth including drawer fronts is 14″, and total depth including drawer pulls is 14 3/4″.
